Organization: Environmental monitoring station, Jilin Province

Amount: $50,000

Mr. Jie Liu's team has developed an innovative bioassay technique to monitor water toxicity, which uses a combination of different species of aquarium fish, inexpensive and readily available from local markets, to achieve fast and reliable detection. The technique is based on grassroots knowledge and designed to promote citizen participation in water monitoring and conservation. Mr. Jie Liu will establish grassroots water monitoring stations in counties and towns in Jilin Province, strengthen the capacity of the local environmental community to monitor water quality, and create a GIS database to share the water quality info, thus promoting the conservation of local resources.
