2011 Evening of Exploration Gala

On Thursday, June 23, 2011, National Geographic hosted a gala to celebrate and support the Society’s Emerging Explorers and Explorers Program in Washington, D.C.

The inaugural event highlighted oceans and was held during the highly anticipated Explorers Symposium week. National Geographic presented three awards of distinction—the Chairman’s Award to IBM’s Virginia Rometty, the Explorer of the Year Award to Kenny Broad and Wes Skiles, and the Arts Ambassador for the Environment Award to musician Jack Johnson.

Guests had the unique opportunity to meet and converse with dozens of the Society’s explorers one-on-one and receive exclusive project updates. Proceeds from the evening benefited National Geographic’s Emerging Explorers and Explorers Program, helping to further the critical work in exploration and conservation that are the trademark of the Society.
