In the process of a long, long renovation project, this site, which includes five soaring temple pyramids, is former-glory spectacular. Don't be content with a day-trip. To fully sense the majesty, spend the night at one of the handful of hotels near the ruins and start the day with a serenade courtesy of the monkeys, frogs, and birds whose jungle habitat continues to encroach on the great Maya ruins. The trail from Temple V leads to Tikal's oldest known structure, a pyramid. Temple IV, the tallest, can be climbed. When you get to the top, you will see the other temples and the seemingly endless jungle.
