The 2,500-year-old city in the Jordanian desert sits on many a traveler's life list, as it should. One reason for a sense of déjà vu: In the final scene of the 1989 movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the temple that houses the Holy Grail is Petra's Al Khazneh. Petra National Park is speckled with monuments, temples, and a theater; Their stunning motifs and carvings reflect the presence of Assyrians, Edomites, and Nabataeaens, the Arab traders who frequented Petra. As with all life list places, it makes sense to show up early in the morning.
