High in the mountains of Chiapas, San Cristóbal de las Casas is one of the most photogenic spots in Mexico: colorful, historic and remarkably complex with its narrow streets and intricate Spanish architecture. This is the homeland of the Tzotzil Maya, who come into town to sell their beautiful crafts in the town's central market. Also, don't miss the homegrown chocolate, sold in various chocolate shops around town. Drink a cup of semi-amargo (bitter dark) chocolate or sip the sweeter "con leche" variety, served up like a frothy cappuccino.
