Find images that illustrate the significance of the millennium—a photo editor’s dream or nightmare?

For Geographic veteran Steve St. John the assignment was a bit of both. Keenly interested in conveying “a sense of the effect of time,” he met the challenge with a remarkable memory for the 500,000 images in the Society’s collection, the discipline to click through picture after picture, and a playful imagination.

As a “backup plan” to the usual series of single images, St. John grouped his finds into thought-provoking pairs. His labor—and fun—yielded a quirky, compelling gallery that breathes new life into an ancient question: What does it mean to be human?
