At home among the ice, the Explorer was the first cruise ship designed and outfitted for the frigid waters of below the Antarctic Circle. Her hull was strengthened especially to resist the ravages of icebergs. She was built in 1969 and refurbished in 1994.

The Explorer's ports of call don't offer much shopping. But intrepid passengers can clamber onto a Zodiac, a small motorized raft, and venture onto the southernmost continent. Dress code: parka, life jacket, and knee-high rubber boots.

The crew aboard the Explorer includes naturalists, geologists, and other experts. They brief passengers before field trips, give lectures, and take casual questions during the voyage.
