Smith’s hatchling models were featured in the May GEOGRAPHIC article on dinosaur eggs. Baby dinosaur bones are quite rare in the geologic record and his models represent some of the skeletons that have been found at only about 20 sites around the world. After making a steel armature, Smith clads the “skeleton” with clay muscles to flesh out the dinosaur. He makes a mold then casts the model by pouring polyurethane or epoxy into the mold. When it hardens, the finished hatchling is painted.
