Genghis Khan emerged from the Central Asian steppe nearly eight
centuries ago. He unified Mongolia, then led his inexorable cavalry
south and west, defeating armies, razing cities, and inspiring terror
among those who might oppose his will. Genghiss sons and grandsons
sustained his warrior legacy. Their dominion spanned Asia and
pressed into Europe, forming the largest land empire in human history. |

The Mongolian steppe remains a sea of grass, as it was in the time of
Genghis Khan. Many Mongolians still live the nomadic existence that
prevailed when the great khans held sway. The imprint of the khans
remains in the soul of the Mongolian peopleand
of the peoples they vanquished. |
