The field station, run by the University of Canterbury’s Zoology Department, is named for the late Professor Edward Percival. He took Canterbury’s marine biology students for walks along these shores and tested them there, rather than in classrooms. He would stoop over, pick up a creature, and ask questions about it. The station opened in 1963 as a marine laboratory. The name was later changed to field station in acknowledgment of Kaikoura as an ecosystem and not merely a marine environment.
