Covering the Kaikoura expedition for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine are photographers Emory Kristof and Maria Stenzel and writer Tom Allen. Emory is also heading the Mystique crew. Maria flew to New Zealand from Antarctica, where she had covered another magazine story. Flying from here, she arrives home in Washington, D.C., for the first time since last December. Tom shuttles between the two expedition ships to gather information. Former assistant director of the National Geographic Book Service, he is a frequent contributor to the magazine and the author of Shadows in the Sea, a book about sharks. next page
