Members of the Kaikoura Expedition are assigned to two ships, each with a specific mission. On board the Mystique is a team headed by National Geographic photographer Emory Kristof; on the Tanekaha is the team of Dr. Clyde F.E. Roper of the Smithsonian Institution. The shore facility in Kaikoura is the Edward Percival Field Station of the University of Canterbury. Linking the teams is a communications system using cell phones and ship-to-ship radios.
