Mystique is an 82-foot (25-meter) yacht refitted into a research ship. Aboard are:
  • Emory Kristof, National Geographic photographer who specializes in underwater photography. With his camera systems he has chronicled the undersea world—from the sunken Titanic to the atolls of the Pacific.
  • Teddy Tucker, oceanic explorer, treasure-hunter, and an authority on deep-water ecosystems.
  • Mike Cole, National Geographic electronic photography expert.
  • Gregory Stone, associate director and conservation officer at the New England Aquarium in Boston.
  • Nigel Jolly, a New Zealander, is the captain. In his crew are his son Matt, Ian McIntyre, Rich Gallagher of San Rafael, California and Gary Melville, a fisherman who is providing local lore.
