Electrical power enters a typical apartment building via a single cable which branches out to each apartment. The meter that records the power usage has changed little from Thomas Edison’s design. A disk floats between two magnets. The more electricity you use, the more powerful the magnetic field becomes—making the disk spin more rapidly.
