3.  THE WATER HAMMER
In 1993, a “water hammer” pipe break occurred in Grammercy Park. The 400°F (204°C) steam hit relatively cool water, and a steam pipe exploded—killing three people. The incident could have been avoided, but long-time employees who knew the system had been retired in an effort to lower costs.
