Natural gas enters the city at two locations: 74th Street and 134th Street. There the gas flows into a distribution network that delivers it to regulators in building basements. Natural gas flames burn twice as high as the old manufactured gas, so in the early 1950s every appliance in the city was adapted to handle the new supply.
