Are these trees? Or stones? Actually silicified trees are a little of both. Their roots soaked up water full of silica, a basic building block of rock. You may already be familiar with silica: It's in quartz, shimmering opals, and chert arrowheads. Given enough time, silica crystals in wood can turn trees into big rock posts—a petrified forest!
