After their recovery artifacts are transferred from the ship to the laboratory operated by the Dominican Republic’s Commission for Underwater Archaeological Recovery. Most of the silver items are cleaned with a gentle acid bath and placed in an electrolysis tank to reduce corrosion. Artifacts are restored as near as possible to their colonial-era luster, then weighed and photographed.
