Throughout the night, the McArthur traveled in straight lines along Santa Rosa Island in areas targeted for sonar documentation. This morning Guy Cochrane is a happy geologist, now underwater, cruising along the sea floor, seeing for himself the reality of what the black and white acoustic images have suggested. Later today, Kip Evans, National Geographics SSE staff photographer, will follow up with a long dive to focus on images of Santa Rosas underwater wildlife. Above, we saw earlier today some spectacular examples of the local faunatwo blue whales, gliding by near the ship. Their long, sleek bodies are fueled by millions of krill, small shrimp-like creatures that presently are enjoying a population boom along the California coast.
