Despite the richness of the Channel Islands ecosystem, not all of its resident species are thriving. The numbers of the bocaccio rockfish, the cowcod rockfish, and the white abalone have dramatically declined in recent years, making scientific surveys of their populations a research priority for the Sustainable Seas Expeditions.

Using the DeepWorker sub, expedition leaders will also explore and videotape the habitat of market squid, which are being harvested in increasing numbers by commercial fishermen. Another project for DeepWorker will be to investigate the underwater terrain around the islands; it is likely that the expedition will discover new species and as-yet-undetected shipwrecks when it visits these unexplored depths.
