Follow the National Geographic team deep into the caves of Nicaragua, home to thousands of vampire bats.

Vampire bats are taking a bite out of the burgeoning Nicaraguan cattle industry and even some people—sometimes with lethal results, as a new EXPLORER episode reveals.

For Vampire Bats, producer Kevin Krug and associate producer Rakhi Varma accompanied Bill and Sarah Kern of the Florida Bat Center into the tropical caves of Nicaragua. For EXPLORER’s online audience, they offer stories behind the show, including some seriously sticky secrets of the shoot and a tragic tale of death by vampire bite.
