Domed, Not Doomed
Virtually unscathed after the severe earthquake that rocked Istanbul, Turkey, on August 17, 1999, the Hagia Sophia cathedral reopened the very next day. Built by Emperor Justinian in the mid-sixth century A.D., its original dome fell during an earthquake in 563.
