National Geographic Education Foundation

About the Education Foundation

The mission of National Geographic's Education Foundation is to motivate and enable each new generation to become geographically literate.

To help achieve that goal, the Education Foundation is working in several key focus areas:

The Foundation awards more than five million dollars each year to support teacher training, outreach and other programs that promote geography education. At the heart of the Foundation's effort is its support for a national grassroots network of Geography Alliances—state-wide partnerships between academic professors and K-12 teachers to provide professional development, networking, and more. Unsolicited applications are not accepted, although nonprofit organizations may contact the Education Foundation with letters of interest (see Contact Us, below).

Policy Reform
Currently, all core academic disciplines except geography receive U.S. federal help. National Geographic is leading the charge to fix that by working with Congress on a Policy Initiative.

Public Engagement
The Education Foundation joined with a coalition of national business and non-profit partners to launch a public engagement campaign called My Wonderful World. The campaign aims to energize parents and educational leaders on behalf of geography education in schools, at home, and in the community.
