Oklahoma Geography Education Fund

The Oklahoma Geography Education Fund was established in 1990 to encourage, increase, and improve the teaching of geography in Oklahoma, especially at the elementary and secondary school levels, and to increase and disseminate geographic knowledge more broadly in the state. The fund invites proposals from individual schools, school districts, educational organizations, parent groups, and other organizations with the appropriate federal tax-exempt status or equivalent. The fund makes grants ranging from $500 to $20,000.

The fund looks for projects that:
  1. advance geography education through the application of educational technologies in ways that are useful, stimulating, and affordable;
  2. enhance the competence and confidence of K-12 teachers through improved geography teaching methods and materials; and
  3. encourage content and performance standards in geography education.
Priority is given to proposals that complement and/or supplement the work of the Oklahoma Alliance for Geographic Education and use fund grants in partnership with other funding sources. The fund will not consider proposals solely for the purpose of travel, the purchase of classroom materials (e.g., maps, globes, computers), or scholarships.

Application Process

The fund reviews letters of inquiry in the fall. Finalists are asked to submit full proposals in January and grants are awarded in March. A two-page letter of inquiry is due October 15.
