Winging Northward—A Shorebird’s Journey (1-2:30 p.m. EST)
Electronic Field Trip
Educators can bring the excitement of migrating shorebirds to students with this interactive television program for grades 4-8, from the Prince William Network. Students can follow Maya, a Western Sandpiper, on her exciting journey from Mexico to Alaska. The free program includes a Web component with classroom activities on shorebirds, wetlands, and migration.

International Migratory Bird Day—A Celebration of Special Places for Birds
This event, now in its eleventh year, takes place on the second Saturday in May. The American Birding Association runs the program, which focuses this year on protecting and providing habitats for migrating birds.

Take part in an annual educational program and art contest that focuses on wetland and waterfowl conservation. The Federal Duck Stamp Contest is open to K-12 students who are enrolled in public or private schools, or are home-schooled. Geography Action! 2002 Workshop—Satellite Broadcast for Educators
Take part in this Geography Action! Workshop on America’s Backyard: Exploring Our Public Lands,” run by the National Geographic Society. Learn how to forge partnerships with other educators, use a multi-disciplinary approach to education, and explore new lesson plans and activities related to conservation of public lands. This is a great opportunity to be part of a workshop given by nationally known educators, to identify other educators interested in conservation, and to find out how to get involved in celebrating Geography Action! in the classroom, school, or community.

Plant a tree on National Arbor Day and make a meaningful contribution to improving the environment for future generations. The National Arbor Day Foundation designates the third week in April for the celebration, but many states observe the event at other times; check the Arbor Day online calendar for states’ schedules.
