About Geography Action! for Educators

About Geography Action!
Geography Action! is an annual conservation and awareness program designed to educate and excite people about our natural, cultural, and historic treasures. Geography Action! starts each spring, and culminates during Geography Awareness Week, November 11–17, when the results of how people “took action” will be posted online.

Take Action!
Join the National Geographic Society in protecting our greatest resource—the Earth—by “taking action” with the hands-on conservation activities at the Activities Menu. Fill out our online survey to tell the world what you did for rivers, then log on during Geography Awareness Week for survey results.

Note to Educators
Geography Action! builds on Geography Awareness Week, an educational program of the National Geographic Society for 14 years. Geography Action! includes online resources for K–12 educators and students that

  • Are grouped into three grade levels, but can be adapted for younger or older students
  • Make geography relevant and fun, while constructing a framework for students to examine conservation issues
  • Contain an online student version and a corresponding educator version with instructions and background information in red
  • Can be conducted online or printed out
  • Contain an online component, which students can perform in or out of class
  • Link to related Web sites for educators and students (Educators: Be sure to see students’ Web sites, which differ from educators’ Web sites.)
  • Address the National Geography Standards

Geography Action! Rivers 2001 includes a contest; an educational, interactive river system; links to river conservation groups; and a calendar of events.

Get Involved
Plan to celebrate Geography Awareness Week, November 11–17, 2001, in your classroom, your school, your district, or beyond.
