The stone-paved walls of Machu Picchu bear testament to the engineering prowess of the Inca civilization. Built in the mid-15th century under direction of Inca emperor Pachacutec, the lost city’s walls contain stone blocks weighing as much as 300 tons (272.16 metric tons). Workers fitted the blocks together seamlessly without mortar.
