Upstream of the new dam, a placid reservoir which may cover many thousands of acres has replaced the free-flowing river. This major change causes other changes: Lots of water can evaporate from the large, still surface of reservoirs. Thats a problem in arid regions. As water entering the reservoir slows down, it also drops most of the sediment it carries. After many years, this accumulating sediment can completely fill some reservoirs. Does the benefit of a reservoir to store water outweigh the costs of increased evaporation in dry places? What might be done to stop sediment from filling a reservoir? ©1997 National Geographic Society. All rights reserved. |
