OFFICIAL "Radical Renovation: School Edition" CONTEST RULES

Sponsors are National Geographic Society and Ford Motor Company ("Sponsors").

WHO MAY ENTER
Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are age eighteen (18) or above at the time of entry. Entrants must be Kindergarten through sixth grade teachers at a public or private school entering Contest on behalf of his/her class. Employees of National Geographic Society, Ford Motor Company and their agents, affiliates, and subsidiaries and their immediate family members or persons living in the same household of such individuals are not eligible.

HOW TO ENTER
  • Go to www.nationalgeographic.com/gogreen/ford for your free National Geographic Radical Renovation School Edition Lesson Plan and an entry form. Complete the entry form with required information, including the name of teacher's school, school address, school phone number, and name and signature.
  • Along with the entry form, you must also submit your action plan. The action plan form is found on pages five (5) through seven (7) of your National Geographic Radical Renovation School Edition Lesson plan. Answer all of the questions on the action plan to identify an environmental problem at your school and to outline steps that you would take to initiate environmentally responsible improvements to fix the problem, such as putting a recycling bin in your cafeteria, replacing standard light bulbs with fluorescent lights, using recycled paper in your classroom, planting trees on your campus, building an outdoor classroom, and much more. You may include photos, videos or drawings to further illustrate your action plan. Your action plan will be judged in accordance with the Judging Criteria.
  • Send your submission by mail to: National Geographic School Publishing, attn: Radical Renovation: School Edition, P.O. Box 96108, Washington, DC, 20089-6098. All entries become the property of Sponsors and will not be returned or acknowledged. Sponsors are not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete, illegible, or postage-due mail. Entries void if illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error, or obtained through fraud or theft.
  • Number of entries per person is unlimited.
CONTEST PRIZE
One Grand Prize Winner will be selected and the Grand Prize will be awarded to the Grand Prize Winner's school. The Grand Prize will be provided by Ford Motor Company. The Grand Prize Winner's school will be awarded $100,000 to implement improvements that are environmentally responsible and/or that benefit the environment ("Grand Prize"). These improvements will be based on, but not limited to, the Grand Prize Winner's contest submission and will be completed by a licensed contractor(s) that meets both Ford and the Grand Prize Winner's school's approval. (Approximate retail value ("ARV") is $100,000). Taxes and all other items not stated herein are the sole responsibility of the winner. No prize substitution by winner permitted. Sponsors reserve the right to substitute prize in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. Any ongoing maintenance, replacement or repair obligations pertaining to the environmentally responsible improvements installed or constructed at the Grand Prize Winner's school shall be the sole responsibility of the Grand Prize Winner's school.

With the approval of the Grand Prize Winner's school, Paul DiMeo and Constance Ramos of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ("Talent") will be a part of the Grand Prize Winner's school's renovation team. Participation of Talent has no monetary value, and is subject to Talent's availability and Grand Prize Winner's school's discretion. Should Talent not participate, Sponsors reserve the right to complete environmentally responsible improvements with other individuals of Sponsors' choosing.

SCHEDULE
This Contest begins February 1, 2005 and ends April 7, 2005. Entries must be postmarked by April 7, 2005 and received by April 14, 2005. Entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.

JUDGING
  • One Grand Prize Winner will be selected from among all eligible entries received.
  • A panel of National Geographic and Ford Motor Company experts will judge submissions on imagination, creativity, and how well the National Geographic Radical Renovation School Edition Lesson Plan is translated into an action plan ("Judging Criteria").
  • Contest consists of one round. The Grand Prize Winner will be selected on April 22, 2005, and notified by e-mail or regular mail on or about April 22, 2005. Odds of winning depend on total number of eligible entries received.
NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY AND A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. CONTEST IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED. Decision of the judges is final. Grand Prize Winner and Grand Prize Winner's school are required to sign an affidavit of eligibility, liability release and certification to use the prize money to carry out environmentally responsible renovations at the school within 10 days of receipt of prize notification. Noncompliance or return of prize notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Sponsors reserve the right to select an alternate winner should the Grand Prize Winner's school be unable to accept the Grand Prize for improvements that are environmentally responsible and/or that benefit the environment. By participating, participants agree to release, discharge and hold harmless Sponsors, American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., and their partners, parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder. Participants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the judges are final on all matters relating to the Contest; and (c) if he/she wins that Sponsors may use the winning submission and/or his/her name, and/or likeness, and/or voice for advertising and promotional purposes without compensation (except residents of Tennessee and where prohibited by law) and upon request, to provide consent to such use in writing. All federal, state, and local taxes are the sole responsibility of the winners. This Contest is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Certain restrictions may apply.

NOTICE TO INDIVIDUALS: REMOVAL FROM MAILING LIST: Any individual (or other duly authorized person) may elect to exclude the name and address of that individual from all lists used by National Geographic Society to mail skill contests or sweepstakes.
