OFFICIAL 2008 WHERE'S YOUR NATURE VALLEY? PHOTO CONTEST RULES
NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY AND A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING.

TERM

The Where's Your Nature Valley? Photo Contest (Contest) begins June 19, 2008 at 9:00am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and ends September 30, 2008 at 11:59pm EDT. All entries must be received by September 30, 2008 at 11:59pm EDT.

WHO MAY ENTER

Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States (excluding Puerto Rico) who are age eighteen (18) or older at the time of entry. Employees of National Geographic Society, Fox Entertainment Group, General Mills Marketing Inc. (General Mills) and their parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, agents, and advertising and promotional agencies and their immediate families or members of the same household are not eligible. CONTEST IS VOID IN PUERTO RICO AND WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW.

HOW TO ENTER

You may submit your entry either digitally online or in the form of a print by mail.

  • To submit a digital entry, visit www.nationalgeographic.com/grandcanyon/NV_Entry.html and follow the step-by-step directions on that page. Photograph submissions must be in JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) digital format, at least 1,600 pixels wide if a horizontal image or 1,600 pixels tall if a vertical image, and no greater than 2 megabytes (2048 kilobytes) in file size. Please provide only the original, unmodified digital camera image; however, you may crop the image.
  • To submit a print entry, visit www.nationalgeographic.com/grandcanyon/NV_Entry.html to download an entry form and fill out all of the required information, or fill out a 3 x 5 card with your name, address, and telephone number. Include a short caption describing what is happening in the photograph. Mail your entry form or card and caption, along with your photograph (described below) to: Where's your Nature Valley? Photo Contest, c/o Tiffanie Johnson National Geographic Digital Media, 1145 17th N.W., Washington, DC 20036. Color or black-and-white prints only. For prints, the original negative (or color transparency or digital file) must be available so winners pictures can be published. Only the original, unmodified image may be submitted; however, you may crop the image. Prints may be any size up to 8 x 10 inches. No framed photographs will be accepted.
  • We will accept submissions beginning on June 19, 2008. . All entries must be received by September 30, 2008 at 11:59pm EDT. Entries become property of Sponsor and will not be returned or acknowledged.
  • Submit an original photograph, taken by you, of you or someone you know experiencing the beauty or wonder of nature. Your photograph must comply with the following requirements (the Photograph Requirements):
    1. The use of public domain images is prohibited.
    2. Photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings, and other works of art will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement or fraud; provided that entrants, upon Sponsors request, must provide a release form as described below in Releases. When photographing the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame close up of another persons art.
    3. Photographs that include other persons will be accepted, provided that entrants, upon Sponsors request, submit a release form as described below in Releases.
    4. The content of each photograph must be simple, uncluttered and pleasing to the eye. It should strike a responsive chord in the viewer and portray one or more individuals experiencing the beauty or wonder of nature.
    5. The photo, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the contest entrant. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant and that no other party has any right, title, claim or interest in the photograph.
    6. Obscene, provocative, or otherwise objectionable content will not be considered, and such determination is solely at the discretion of Sponsor.
  • LIMIT ONE ENTRY PER PERSON.
  • The photograph will be judged in accordance with the Judging Criteria, as defined below.

RELEASE

Upon Sponsors request, each entrant in the contest must provide a signed written personal release and/or license from (i) all persons who appear in the photograph submitted, and/or (2) the copyright owner of any sculpture, artwork or other copyrighted material that appears in the photograph entry, authorizing use of the photograph in Sponsors, General Mills and Sponsors and General Mills designees editorial publications, advertising, marketing and promotions in any and all media now known or hereafter known throughout the world in perpetuity, without additional compensation, permission or notification, unless prohibited by law. All releases must be in the form provided by Sponsor. Failure to provide such releases upon request may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. CONTEST PRIZES

THE POTENTIAL WINNERS ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN THE FOLLOWING: (1) AN AFFIDAVIT OF ELIGIBILITY AND LIABILITY RELEASE; (2) WARRANTY OF OWNERSHIP AND LICENSE; AND (3) PUBLICITY RELEASE, UNLESS PROHIBITED BY LAW, WITHIN 15 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF NOTICE IN ORDER FOR SPONSOR TO AWARD THE PRIZE. NONCOMPLIANCE OR RETURN OF PRIZE NOTIFICATION AS UNDELIVERABLE MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION AND SELECTION OF AN ALTERNATE WINNER.

Sponsor will award the following prizes:

  • One (1) Grand Prize Winner will be selected. The Grand Prize consists of an 8-day, 7-night Grand Canyon rafting trip in the Grand Canyon for the winner and one (1) guest. The trip will include roundtrip coach air transportation for two (2) from the major US airport closest winners home to Las Vegas, NV; all inclusive meals, equipment (sleeping bags, tents, etc.) and transportation to the Grand Canyon. Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of Grand Prize is $8,500, based on a sample originating city. Winner must coordinate with Sponsor regarding the date winner wishes to travel, and must give Sponsor at least thirty (30) days advance notice of desired travel dates. The trip must be taken between April and September 2009. Actual travel dates may vary and blackout dates and restrictions may apply. Grand Prize Winner and travel companion must travel on same itinerary. Frequent flyer miles may not be available. Tips, taxes and all other items not stated herein are the sole responsibility of the winner and travel companion. No prize transfer, assignment or substitution by winner permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded.
  • Retail value of Grand Prize may vary depending on location of Grand Prize Winners residence. Any difference between actual retail value of prize and the ARV will not be awarded.
  • Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.

JUDGING

  • Contest consists of two (2) rounds of evaluation. The judges will use the same Judging Criteria in each round. The top candidates in Round One will proceed to Round Two.
  • A panel of National Geographic photographers and photo editors (Judges) will evaluate the entries based on the following criteria (Judging Criteria):
    1. Simplicity of photograph 20%
    2. Uncluttered imagery 30%
    3. Extent to which the photograph portrays one or more individuals experiencing the beauty or wonder of nature 50%
  • Winners will be chosen on or about October 19, 2008 and notified by mail by October 31, 2008.
  • Decisions of the Judges are final.

LICENSE

Selected entries may be published by Sponsor or its designee in one of Sponsors or General Mills magazines or on their websites, or in any other medium, at Sponsors or General Mills discretion. By participating, all entrants grant an irrevocable license in the Entries to Sponsor, General Mills, their licensees and affiliates and their designees (collectively, the Authorized Parties) and acknowledge that any Authorized Party may exploit, edit, modify, reproduce, publish, distribute or otherwise use the Entries and all elements of such Entries, including, without limitation, the names and likenesses of any persons or locations embodied therein, in any media now or hereafter known, without the restriction, including commercially using and exploiting the Entries to fullest extent possible in perpetuity, without additional consideration, notification, permission to entrant or any third party, unless prohibited by law. Additionally, by participating, each entrant grants to Authorized Parties the unrestricted right to use all statements made in connection with the Contest, and pictures or likeness of Contest participants, or choose not to do so, at its sole discretion, for not additional consideration, notification or approval except where prohibited by law.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

By participating, participants agree to release, discharge and hold harmless National Geographic Society, General Mills, Nature Valley and their partners, parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.

CONDITIONS

THIS CONTEST IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED. This Contest is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Certain restrictions may apply. Entries void if the Sponsor determines the photograph to not be an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft.

Participants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; and (b) that the decisions of the Judges are final on all matters relating to the Contest. All federal, state and local taxes, fees and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize are/is ineligible or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another winner.

Grand Prize winner and his/her travel companion must travel together on the same itinerary. The trip may not be combined with any other offer. Regulations and conditions may apply. Grand Prize winner and Grand Prize winners travel companion will be responsible for all necessary immunizations and other preventative measures, travel authorizations and for any travel insurance. By accepting the Grand Prize, Grand Prize winner and his/her travel companion represent that they understand that travel, whether in civilized or remote areas and whether by plane, automobile, boat, raft, or other conveyance, or by foot, on land or water, and in the air, contains some inherent element of risk of accident, illness, injury, loss or death, which may be caused by negligence, forces of nature, wild animals or other agencies, known or unknown. Grand Prize winner and his/her travel companion represent that they recognize that such risks may be present at any time before, during and after the trip. In order to be considered a Grand Prize winner and partake of the enjoyment of this adventure travel trip, potential Grand Prize winner and his/her travel companion must be willing to accept the risk, and to confirm their acceptance to such risk in writing at Sponsors request.

NOTICE TO INDIVIDUALS: REMOVAL FROM MAILING LIST: Any individual (or other duly authorized person) may elect to exclude the name and address of that individual from all lists used by National Geographic Society to mail skill contests or sweepstakes. To elect to have an individuals name excluded from all such lists, submit a removal request in writing to: Where's Your Nature Valley? Photo Contest, National Geographic Digital Media, 1145 17th NW, Washington, DC 20036. This notification system may be used to prohibit mailing of all skill contests or sweepstakes by National Geographic Society to such individual.
