Who may purchase images and text from Image Collection?

Professional stock photography buyers seeking images and text for advertising, corporate, editorial, and other creative professional use.

We operate within the accepted guidelines of the stock photography industry for providing and licensing images and text.

Individual consumers should only contact the National Geographic Image Collection if they are familiar with—and willing to pay—professional fees for image, text, and research requests.

How do I obtain a license to use National Geographic images and text?

The National Geographic Image Collection oversees the licensing of images and text by the photographers and authors we represent. Each image or text excerpt is priced uniquely depending on use. Please note the following guidelines:

Text licensing: The minimum fee for a text excerpt is U.S. $100. Final fees will vary according to the amount of text and how it is to be used.

Image licensing includes photographs, artwork, and maps by photographers and artists we represent. Our minimum fees are U.S. $250 per image for editorial use, U.S. $300 per image for commercial use, and U.S. $500 per image for advertising use.

How to license National Geographic images

Submit a request by e-mailing us with the following information:

• Tell us what you want. There are two ways to request materials: by specific image and by general topic. If the picture appeared in one of our publications, tell us which publication (month/year for periodicals, title for books) and which page. If you don’t have a specific image in mind, we can also do picture research on specific topics and provide a selection of images for your review—either electronically or by courier service. Dupe and research fees, as well as delivery fees, apply.

• Describe your intended use. Use fees are determined by the specifics of your project. Please indicate your intended use: advertising, corporate, commercial, or editorial. Also, indicate whether the material is for U.S. or non-U.S. use. Please include all relevant information such as press run size, the languages in which it will appear, and the size and placement of our picture within your product. We will then be able to quote a reproduction fee.

• Select a delivery option. If you have requested picture research, we will ship low-resolution proof prints for you to review. We usually send these within 24 hours, and they do not need to be returned. Or we can post a selection of images to a secure Web site for your review. When you decide to use a picture, we supply top-quality sheet film transparencies (most other formats and media, including digital files, are available on request). The dupe fee for our reproduction-quality 4- by 5-inch (10- by 13-centimeter) cut sheet film is U.S. $40. Lab work requires five business days (rush service is available at additional cost). We ship by regular U.S. mail or by most major couriers if you supply your account number.

In many cases, the National Geographic Society does not represent a photographer whose photographs appear in our magazines or books. If that proves to be the case with any of the images you want, we will do our best to refer you to the appropriate source for those photographs.

May I reproduce National Geographic images and text for educational or school use?

Many people contact the National Geographic Image Collection for permission to reproduce material for educational or school use. In some cases copyright law does allow the reproduction of published material without publisher consent, and it is possible that your request is covered by this provision. Please refer to the U.S. Copyright Office (FL102) for detailed information on fair use.

The Society has no objection to the reproduction of its images for educational purposes provided that the following criteria apply:

Images are used one time only, in a noncommercial educational setting. (One oral report, one written report, or one day of educational display is allowed by a single student or teacher for a single class.)

No fees are charged for your presentation using the images.

Images are not reused, further reproduced, or distributed.

Images are destroyed at the conclusion of the project.

Images are not to be scanned for use on a Web page or with any online service or application.

May I use National Geographic images in artistic endeavors?

This depends on the proposed use. The National Geographic Society does not generally allow its images to be used as artist references or as part of art collages.

If you create artwork based on National Geographic images, you may not publicly display or sell the artwork without obtaining a license to do so. You must obtain the license for the original image from the copyright holder. We are contractually obligated to our photographers and artists to charge fees for any reuse of their images, including artistic uses. Our minimum licensing fee is U.S. $250.

If the National Geographic Image Collection does not represent the owner of an image, you must contact the photographer, artist, or his or her agent directly to obtain permission for use.

May I use National Geographic images and text on my Web site?

No, you are prohibited from using our images and text without obtaining a license to do so. Although individual Web sites are personal, the use of our material on the World Wide Web is considered a commercial enterprise because there is the potential for millions of people to view it.

Our images are copyrighted either by a photographer, or by the National Geographic Society. We charge a minimum usage fee of U.S. $250 per image.

If you are a professional editorial- or commercial-photography buyer and would like to license our images or text for use on your Web site, please contact us:

May I request a single print for personal use?

Yes, but it will cost at least U.S. $800. Our photographers require that prints be priced according to fine-art rates.

Images are printed on 20-by-24-inch (51-by-61-centimeter) Fuji paper with a 16-by-20-inch (41-by-51-centimeter) image area, a white border, and a glossy finish. Pricing begins at U.S. $800 and varies according to subject and photographer.

This is a special service provided by the lab. Prices may vary according to size and quantity, and begin at U.S. $30 to U.S. $85.

May I submit images to the National Geographic Society?

The National Geographic Society does not solicit images from photographers. Most photographic work is assigned by editors to staff and freelance photographers with years of experience in photojournalism.

There are many stock photo agencies that do solicit images from photographers. Listings of agencies and other useful information can be found at the following sites:

American Society of Magazine Photographers
Coordination of European Picture Agencies
Picture Agency Council of America
Stockphoto Network

The National Geographic Image Collection operates as a stock agency, but we are only permitted to represent material from those photographers and artists whose work has appeared in a National Geographic product.
