International Paper is proud to introduce: National Geographic (TM) Photo Lab Quality Paper

Longevity

The longevity of an ink jet print is the time a printed picture can be displayed before objectionable fading occurs. In order to maximize the longevity, prints should be framed under glass and not be exposed to direct sunlight or a light intensity of more than 450 lux during 12 hours per day. This illumination corresponds to the light level in a reasonably lit office environment.

The longevity of National GeographicTM Premium Photo Paper was tested under controlled laboratory conditions using an industry-standard Fadometer and commercially available picture-framing glass procured from a custom-frame shop. The Xenon Arc lamp of the Fadometer was filtered to approximate the spectral distribution of natural sunlight.

Color prints manufactured with a given printer/ink/paper combination were tested under the above conditions until the end-point criteria (25% density loss in Cyan and Magenta, 30% density loss in Yellow, and 15% density loss in Black) were met.

To translate the time it takes each sample to reach the end point into a certain number of years, printer/ink/paper combinations for which there are results published by independent third-party-testing institutes were tested alongside the product as an internal standard to ensure comparability between papers and claims made across brands of paper and ink. The longevity result was then calculated based on the actual relative performance of the internal standard and its claims versus the sample tested.

It is very important to keep in mind that every accelerated test has to be based on certain assumptions with regard to the conditions actually experienced by any given picture during its lifetime if more than a statement about relative performance is desired. The actual lifetime of any given print depends on the printer and ink used and the viewing conditions the print experiences.

Based on the above criteria and methodology, prints on National Geographic Premium Photo Paper can be expected to last for more than 100 years when printed using HP Vivera inks. Overall, ink manufacturers are constantly improving the lightfastness and stability of their ink sets.
