Fishing the Columbia River using a latticework trap in present-day Washington State
When the expedition emerged starving from the snowy Bitterroot Range in late September 1805, they found the Nez Perce villages. The tribe provided them with much-needed food, including fish from the then-teeming Columbia River, and a place to rest.
