In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson commissioned his 28-year-old secretary, Meriwether Lewis, “to find the shortest & most convenient route of communication between the U.S. and the Pacific Ocean” and to report on the uncharted West.

Lewis, in turn, invited 32-year-old William Clark, whom Lewis had served under in a frontier militia, to co-command the expedition.
