Actors in a buffalo dance at a Mandan village
Expedition members participated in a buffalo dance, a ceremony intended to bring hunting success, during their winter 1804-05 stay in a Mandan village. The Journals of Lewis and Clark mention one hunt where more than 20 bison were killed.
