Meriwether Lewis (Kelly Boulware) using a sextant
“Two sextants ... a Surveyor’s compass ... and a set of plotting instruments” were among the many instruments the Corps would use to map their westward progress. Before heading west in 1803, Lewis had studied cartography, zoology, botany, medicine, and astronomy with leading scientists in Philadelphia.
