A bushy plant with large, highly divided leaves and a short, thick, rounded cluster of small white flowers in leaf axils or at stem ends. Flowers about 0.3 in (0.8 cm) wide; petals dropping off as flower opens, leaving numerous stamens. Height: 1-3 ft (0.3-0.9 m).
Moist woods, thickets, and streambanks.
Across northern North America and south throughout West; also south on Great Plains to Nebraska and throughout northern portion of eastern United States.
The berries of red baneberry (and white baneberry) are very poisonous if ingested and may affect the nervous system.
