February 26, 1806, at Fort Clatsop, Oregon.
 

Description
A large mole. Black fur. Short, thick, nearly naked tail. Nearly naked snout. Eyes tiny but visible. Length: 7.89.3 in (19.524 cm); tail: 1.32 in (3.45.1 cm).
 

Habitat
Meadows, fields, and lawns.
 

Range
Pacific coast, from extreme southern British Columbia to northern California.
