Mario Jean Roberty

Mario Roberty, an attorney and art connoisseur, was born in 1945 in Zurich into a multicultural Swiss family. His father was Swiss-French, his mother was Swiss-Italian, and he grew up in Basel in the German-speaking part of the country. Trilingual from an early age, he attended schools in Basel and in Schwyz and graduated from Basel University Law School in 1970, where he was president of the Basel University student body in 1969-70.

Roberty then became assistant to Professor Frédéric-Edouard Klein on questions of international private law, especially international commercial arbitration. In 1972-73 he became a member of the Basel and the Swiss bar associations. He pursued postgraduate studies in Amsterdam, Holland, and at Columbia University, New York, attaining fluency in the English language at that time.

Since 1973 he has headed up his own law firm, concentrating on matters of art law and the protection of cultural heritage throughout the world. His professional activities have led him all over Europe, the Americas, Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and the countries of the former Soviet Union.

In 1992, following a number of trips to the former Soviet Union, he founded the Maecenas Foundation for Ancient Art, Basel, dedicated to the preservation of ancient cultures.

Roberty lives in Basel.
