Freelance photographer William DeKay grew up on a farm near London, Ontario, in Canada. He began his professional career at the London Free Press while attending Ryerson University in Toronto, where he graduated in 1985. After an internship at NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, he joined the Detroit Free Press as a staff photographer. In his seven years there, he tackled everything from breaking news to sports and fashion, winning numerous state and national photojournalism awards. In 1993 he began a photographic exploration of his native country. Photographs from his trip appear in DeKays book, Down Home: A Journey Into Rural Canada. DeKay lives amid vineyards and tomato fields on the north shore of Lake Erie, near Harrow, OntarioCanadas southernmost town. |
