I met photojournalist Ron Tarver in 1982 when he went to work for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Hes an incredibly hard worker with talent and personality, and he continually hones his technical and artistic skills through projects outside his regular newspaper work. I was impressed by the first images I saw from his African-American cowboy portfolio: They represent an intimate, personal look at an African-American experience that is virtually ignored in popular media. Tarver, who comes from a ranch family, captures the spirit and history of black ranchers who helped settle the West. I am excited to see his photographs appear in Visions and in exhibits around the country; they are a significant and valuable part of the American heritage.
