Welcome to the future. A starship streaks across the universe and nears a tiny planet. Crew members step into the transporter (right) and beam down to the planet’s surface. Armed with phasers for defense, they carry out a mission for the United Federation of Planets. Then it’s time to beam back up. With plots like this, Star Trek  has been taking TV and movie viewers to distant galaxies for 30 years. The show is science fiction. Yet its creators base their stories in part on existing technology. Step into the Star Trek  universe and see for yourself.
