A broad, shallow continental shelf in tropical northeastern Australia provides an ideal pedestal for coral growth. The Great Barrier Reef—actually a group of more than 2,800 reefs—reaches as far as 160 miles (260 kilometers) offshore and more than 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) north to south. It supports a diversity of species rivaled only by that of tropical rain forests.
