Resembling a thin crow, the male cormorant dives into the kelp canopy looking for materials with which to build a nest. Paddling to the bottom, it takes mouthfuls of seaweed, resurfaces, and then heads for shore, where the female will help in the construction chores. During breeding season the female’s throat pouch turns bright blue, attracting numerous males, who battle for her attention.
