One of about 20 varieties of kelp in the Monterey Bay sanctuary, bull kelp is the most plentiful
type in the sanctuarys northern reaches. This algae may grow to 60 feet (18 meters), its upper
reaches using its gas-filled balls to float on the surface. More hardy than giant kelp, bull kelp can survive in the rough outer waters of the bay.
