Visitors to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary may experience three marine seasons. In spring and summer, upwelling of cold, deep-ocean water makes the coast foggy. In fall warmer water currents warm the air as well. Wintertime brings chilling rains and cool sunshine.

To preserve the sanctuary’s natural condition, the federal government limits use of motorized personal watercraft, except within four designated areas. Aircraft are prohibited below 1,000 feet (305 meters) along portions of the coast, and it is forbidden to injure or harass marine mammals, turtles, and seabirds.

Twenty-three sites along the coast provide interpretive exhibits and activities, including boat trips, whale watching, fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, and visits to tide pools.

Of special interest is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in the town of Monterey. Here visitors can see animals and plant life of the bay in re-created natural habitats.
