Wild at Heart: Man and Beast in Southern Africa

From the desolate shores of Namibia's Skeleton Coast to the wooded slopes of South Africa's Drakensburg Mountains, photographer and National Geographic Editor in Chief Chris Johns crisscrossed southern Africa to examine a world in transition.

His images tell the story of Africa today—the complex relationships among diverse peoples, remarkable wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes.

Based on a book of the same name, the exhibition features Johns's stunning and evocative photographs, paired with text by best-selling writer Peter Godwin. Both the text and photography capture the essence of southern Africa's dynamic peoples, the breathtaking beauty of its landscapes, and the majestic wildlife that roam its fertile terrain.

Johns's images portray the pressures of progress juxtaposed with the effort to conserve the natural legacy of the continent. Compare images of a matriarch elephant defending her turf with photos of a trapped cheetah on a cattle ranch and of a traditional healer gathering shells with Bushmen, deprived of their traditional hunting grounds. All provide a thoughtful and compelling view of southern Africa.
