Revelers wave traditional red handkerchiefs during the July 6 opening of the 2007 San Fermín festival in Pamplona, Spain. Held since 1591, the event attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year for nine days of revelry, morning bull runs, and afternoon bullfights.

The number of attendees increased this year because the opening day fell on a weekend. Last year more than 200,000 tourists attended the festival.

Over the years the festival has been infused with music, dancing and bullfights. The festival gained worldwide fame after appearing in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises.
