Photo: Surprise Egypt Tombs Yield Ornate Coffins, Dog Mummies

A female mummy wearing a gilded mask was among the unexpected discoveries recently made by a team of U.S. and Russian researchers at the necropolis of Deir el-Banat.

Experts say the newfound mummies are among the best examples yet found from the Ptolemaic era—the span of Greek rule that began shortly after the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C.
