Do you think endangered manatees can be saved?

I think there should be fund raisers for this mammal. This should happen
so there is at least one suitable place where manatees can live.

People should have to have a propeller cage on their boats. If people
do not, they should not be allowed to drive their boats. If people are caught littering, they should pay a fine!

I think that boaters who hit manatees or torture them in anyway should
be sentenced to jail for five years. Manatees are easy to spot so boaters
are obviously not following the posted speed limit or just hitting them
intentionally. I have been following the plight of manatees all of my
life.

I've been writing about manatees for three years, and this site is the
greatest. Congrats, NAT GEO. I've seen sick, dead, and dying manatees
both in the wild, and also in rehabilitation. The most important way to
help manatees is through education. Supporting Save the Manatee Club,
Adopt-a-Manatee program, and Center for Marine Conservation is important,
too. Slow down when boating, and never feed or give water to a wild
manatee. They are wondrous creatures whose lives are so fragile in our
environment -- let's give them a chance.

I believe that manatees can be saved. All it takes is for everyone to
educate each other and to actually enforce the boating laws. I also
believe that we need to make areas that are off-limits to boats and Jet
Skis. People could also make manatee preservation areas where the water
temperature is watched, where there are no boats and Jet Skis, and
where the water is kept clean. I believe that if we all work together
we can make a difference!

I think there should be places where only the manatees are allowed. That
way no one can kill them with boats.

I was watching the news, and it was saying how Jet Skis pollute the water,
and the first thing I thought about were all the animals. I love animals.
Then the next day my friend invited me to go Jet Skiing at the river!
I said no, and then I told her why. We both went to my house, and her
family went without her.

I THINK THAT WITH THE GROWING INTEREST IN ANIMALS WE SHOULD USE THE LAKES
INHIBITED BY MANATEES AND MAKE THESE LAKES INTOOUTDOOR RESEARCH CENTERS
WHERE PEOPLE CAN LEARN TO APPRECIATE AND RESPECT MANATEES. ONLY ROWBOATS
SHOULD BE ALLOWED. IF MORE TIME, A POSITIVE ATTITUDE, AND MONEY ARE PUT
INTO HELPING THESE CREATURES SURVIVE, SURELY WE CAN KEEP THEM FROM GOING
EXTINCT!

Create a safe sanctuary for them, like a zoo except you could let them
be in their natural environment. Also try to educate people about them.
I learned about them on Discovery Channel.

I feel that manatees can be saved by a little work. Everyone needs to
try to work together. One solution would be to make a speed limit for
boats.

I think that manatees are beautiful creatures and should be protected.
My idea is to make NO BOATING zones in the lakes, ponds, and bayous.
These zones will be for manatees and other animals ONLY. These zones
will keep them safe from boat scars. There will also be NO LITTERING in
these areas.

I think manatees should be placed in an area where the water stays at a
suitable temperature and where watercraft is not allowed to enter.
I think manatees should be protected by the state in State Parks.
It would be nice to watch manatees without harming them.

No way man! Humans destroy everything, and that's why I think that
endangered manatees can't be saved!!

There are so many things that kids can do to help, even if they live away
from the coast. They can recycle which makes less trash and pollution.
They can also write letters to Congress and to county officials
and get them to make laws to stop high speed boating in manatee
habitats. In some places, they could even ban boating altogether.
I want to be a wildlife or marine biologist when I get older and save
endangered animals.

I think boat speed limits should be posted in areas where manatees live.
It would hopefully save a lot of manatees.

Jet Skis have become an annoying invention. I see nothing wrong with
motorboats; people have used them responsibly for years. However, Jet
Skis seem to have become quite a problem. Society has already
passed many laws attempting to control the behavior of Americans in the
name of "environmental safety."

Don't pollute the water they live in. Don't allow boats and Jet Skis in
areas where manatees are known to live.

What is the number one threat to these beautiful animals? If it is man, or
boats, then we should have a boat free zone where these animals can live
and eat in peace.

I think that the manatees' area should have a sign that keeps boats out.
This will help the population of manatees grow. I also think that healthy
ones should have a reserved area. I also think that there should be more
sales items in department stores for "adopting" different animals. Some
of the money for the sales item goes to preserving animals.
Maybe on each sales item there could be a picture of what animal you are
helping to save. There should also be less merchandise in stores and
less animal testing. When things are tested on animals, the animals
could die. This is what I think should be done!

I think that all powerboats and other boats with propellers should be
banned from all manatee waterways. Maybe the scientists could attach a
sonar "pinger" to all active manatees to allow boaters to be aware of
the manatees' presence in the area.

Yes, I do think manatees can be saved by making some places were it is
illegal for boats to go. For example, it could be illegal for boats to
travel in area 1, but legal for them to move around in area 2.

Stop throwing garbage in the water. Plus, we need to be careful when
we drive boats. Make more safe places for manatees to live where people
can't hurt them.

Yes!!! For one thing some animals could hold the answer humans don't have
any idea about. I think it should be illegal to pollute or ride a
motorboat in manatee waters. People should do nothing but preserve
those waters.

There should be more habitats like Crystal River in Florida which
protect manatees and provide a safe space for them. Perhaps manatees
could be marked with non-toxic red coloring to make them more visible
to people on the water. If this is not feasible, people's use of
watercraft should be restricted in areas frequented by manatees.

Yes! They should make laws about polluting water, and people shouldn't
ride motorboats where manatees are. They are wonderful animals, and they
deserve to be saved!

I think that if there is a area were there are a lot of manatees,
people should put up a sign that reads "slow manatees in these waters."
Also people should pay attention if they see something at the surface.

People shouldn't ride motor boats near the manatees. People should give
manatees a chance to survive. We can make a difference.

I think manatees can be saved if we really try and help them. I plan on
working with manatees when I grow up, so I hope I will make a difference.
And I hope others will too, because manatees are such beautiful creatures!

I am a big animal lover, and I think we should try and save the manatees.
Put yourself in their place. Suppose we human beings stayed underwater.
We would do something to prevent people from dying, but since
manatees can't do anything, at least we can do something for them!
Remember, animals have their rights too.

What if more Americans helped people like Nancy care for the wildlife?
I think tighter restrictions should be made in the Unites States.
In Australia, our extinction levels are a lot lower simply because the
government has made new laws and enforcement systems.

I LOVE Manatees. I really do. I choose to do a study on them. And it
surprised me that hardly anyone knew about them. I think to help save
them we should ban Jet Boats and Jet Skis. I also think that we should
raise money to help their cause by selling T-shirts.

I think if people know that they are killing something or someone on
purpose just so they can do what they want, they are being truly
unfair to animals, people, and all other living things.

I think we should help the Manatees by RECYCLING! People just
don't know what recycling means to the world. I think we should also
have power boat regulations in areas where Manatees live!

IN THE LAKES, INLETS, ETC. WERE THE MANATEES LIVE, BIOLOGISTS AND COAST
GUARDS SHOULD WATCH THESE AREAS AND MAKE SURE THAT NO BOATERS OR OTHER
PEOPLE OR THINGS HURT THE MANATEES.

I love animals, and I am really willing to help save them. I think we
should be more careful when driving/riding our vehicles so that we don't
go near animal homes, or the animals themselves.
|

Yes. I have a simple solution. All you have to do is restrict boating on
lagoons and in other areas where manatees might live.

The U.S. Coast Guard should place markers where manatees usually hang
out. That way, the driver of a boat will know to stay away from those
areas. It might not totally save the manatees, but it's a start.
